Officer Involved Shooting Labor Day  At Motel In Altoona

The Altoona Police Department identified the man and officers involved in a shooting Monday (Labor Day) at a Motel 6. According to a police news release, 51-year-old Des Moines resident Jeffrey Meyer died after being shot by Altoona Police Detective David Lowe and Polk County Deputy Jason Tart.
Authorities were dispatched to the Motel 6 onAdventureland Drive around 8:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a suspicious person with a weapon. Upon arrival, officers said they found Meyer outside the motel with a gun in his hand. Video shot by witnesses showed from a distance an object in Meyer’s hand that looked to be a gun.
Officers from The Altoona Police Department and Polk County Sheriff’s Office began negotiations with him to no avail, and shots were fired shortly after 9 AM.  Meyer died at the scene and no officers were injured in the incident.Authorities said body cameras and dash cameras recorded the shooting. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting.
The Altoona Police Department said Lowe and Tart are both on paid leave while the shooting is being investigated, which is standard law enforcement practices.
