Pocahontas Teacher Honored for Her Commitment and Passion for STEM

(Alpha Media – Brooke Bickford) On Monday, a Pocahontas teacher was recognized for her efforts to foster enthusiasm and inspire a passion for science, technology, engineering and math that goes beyond the classroom.

Susan Oehlertz, a computer science teacher at Pocahontas Area Community School was chosen as the Northwest STEM regional recipient of the 2022 Iowa STEM Teacher Award.

Oehlertz was recognized by the Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council for her work promoting the importance of computer science for young learners, as well as the unique curriculum she creates to engage her students in the subject.

The award is sponsored by Kemin Industries.

Now in its eighth year, the award is given annually to one full-time, licensed preK-12 teacher from each of the six STEM regions in Iowa.
