Season Of High Expectations For Iowa Central Football Opens Saturday
Iowa Central will open their season Saturday at Dodger Stadium, as they welcome in Southern Shreveport. The NJCAA elected last year to move this season to the spring due to the covid-19 pandemic. Saturday’s opener is the first of an 8 game schedule this spring.
Iowa Central comes into this season with high expectations, as they are ranked 6th in the country in the NJCAA Preseason Poll. The Tritons won the ICCAC (Iowa Community College Athletic Conference) Title last year for the first time in school history. They finished the season with a thrilling win over Nassau, NY in the Graphic Edge Bowl.
On offense, Iowa Central’s strength could be in the trenches. The Tritons have a big, physical offensive line anchored by returning All-American Guard Richard Rodriguez. The Tritons did lose their starting QB from last year, D.J. Irons who was the ICCAC Offensive Player Of The Year. Des Moines Native, Byron Jarrett is a 6 ft. 3 , 245 pound Sophomore who is expected to start at QB.
The Defense will feature returning standouts Romello Gray and Tristin Waugh upfront. But, the secondary could be the most talented unit on either side of the ball. Virginia transfer, Major Williams is expected to start at corner. Williams is a Florida Native who was ranked as a 3 star and was highly recruited out of high school. Williams chose Virginia over offers from Iowa State, South Carolina, Kentucky, NC State and others. Sophomore Kingston Mckinstry is back at Strong Safety after a standout Freshman campaign. He is committed to play at the D-1 level for East Carolina, when his time at Iowa Central is through.
Iowa Central and Southern Shreveport will square at noon on Saturday.
