Stage Set For Epic Rematch Between Bishop Garrigan and Newell-Fonda For The State Title

In any sport when two powerhouse teams or two elite level athletes meet, it’s special. When they meet multiple times, it adds an extra caveat to the series. In Iowa Girls Basketball’s Class 1A, that exact thing has unfolded right before our eyes.

Saturday night it will be #1 Bishop Garrigan and #2 Newell-Fonda in the 1A Girls State Finals. Both teams took care of business and were cruised in the Semifinals on Friday. Garrigan downed Exira-EHK 57-35. They got a dominant performance from D-1 recruit Audi Crooks who had 17 points and 18 boards. Molly Joyce added 17 and Kaylyn Meyers had 10.

#2 Newell-Fonda used an 18-5 run in the 1st quarter against Montezuma to open up a 28-10 lead after the 1st. They led by 22 at the half and as many as 42 in the 4th, and cruised to a 73-34 win. For Newell-Fonda, Bailey Sievers had a game high 15, Macy Sievers and Mary Walker had 12 each, and Maggie Walker added 11.

So now the stage is set for the epic rematch that everyone has been expecting and waiting for. The Mustangs will be looking for their 3rd consecutive State Title and Bishop Garrigan will look for retribution after last season’s loss. The Class 1A Title game is set to tip-off at 6:30 PM on Saturday from Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
