State Semi’s Day 1 Report: Remsen- St. Mary’s Wins Wild One, Fremont Mills Dethrones Don Bosco, Harlan Rolls, North Scott Wins Thriller

The State Semifinals got underway at the UNI Dome Thursday with action in the 8 player and 3 A classes. The morning session saw the 8 player teams take center stage. The game that opened the day from the UNI Dome was one that will go down in history. In game one of the day, Remsen- St. Mary’s beat Montezuma 108-94. That’s not a typo, it really was an offensive onslaught by both teams. RSM trailed at one point in the 3rd Quarter 60-36 but they would come back and tie it just minutes later with an offensive flurry. They would outscore Montezuma 72-48 in the 2nd half to win it. The two teams combined for right at 1,500 yards of total offense and 27 offensive TD’s and 202 total points. Montezuma QB Eddie Burgess would go 34 of 60 passing for 689 yards and 9 TD passes with 1 pick. He would add 4 rushing TD’s in the losing effort. Montezuma would get 20 catches from Trey Shearer for 389 yards and 7 TD catches. DSM QB Blaine Harpenau would do most of his damage on the ground with 40 carries for 357 yards and 4 rushing TD’s. He also added 4 TD passes.
In the other 8 player Semifinal game, Fremont Mills knocked off defending State Champs Don Bosco 32-30. Fremont Mills out gained Don Bosco 317-87 on the ground and 417-197 in total yards. Fremont Mills RB Seth Malcolm 40 carries for 293 yards and 4 TD’s. He was clutch scoring two of those 4 in the final 6:30 of the game to give his team the win. Don Bosco QB Cale Frost has 2 TD passes as well as rushing TD in the game. A new champion will be crowned in 8 player when Remsen St. Mary’s takes on Fremont Mills next week.
In 3A, traditional power Harlan cruised past Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 44-7. A big 2nd half for Harlan allowed them to pull away, they outscored BHRV 27-0 after the break. Harlan led 17-7 at half they would score on a pick 6 to open the 2nd half and seize the momentum. Aidan Hall with 5 catches, 107 rec. yards and a TD for Harlan. RB Kody Noble was the lone bright spot for BHRV with 28 carries for 124 yards and a TD.
In the night cap in 3A, North Scott edged Cedar Rapids-Xavier 17-10 in OT. North Scott led 10-0 after the three quarters. Cedar Rapids Xavier rallied in the 4th with a 10-0 run to tie it and send it to OT. In the extra frame, North Scott would get a TD pass from Carter Markham to Parker Ruth for the game winning score. North Scott and Harlan will tangle for the 3A crown next week.
