State Softball Day One: Fort Dodge Handles Bettendorf, Humboldt Falls Short & WDM-Valley Upset

Monday marked the opening of the 2020 Iowa State Softball Tournament the 50th anniversary of the event being at Rogers Park here in Fort Dodge. It was fitting that #1 Fort Dodge was in the tournament’s first game this year. The Dodgers lived up to the #1 seeding and took care of Bettendorf 7-0. While it was certainly a team win with several Dodgers contributing to the win, it was also a tremendous showing individually for Jalen Adams. She was stellar in the circle with a complete game shutout of a potent Bettendorf team that was hitting over .400 as a team and had Iowa’s 2nd best home run total coming in. Adams would allow just 2 hits while striking out 8. She also had this play at the plate to put the Dodgers on the board in the 3rd.

The Adams 2 run homer would put the Dodgers up 2-0 after the 3rd. LF Chloe Wertz who is probably the most improved hitter in the Dodge rline up over the course of the season, had a 2 run single in the 4th. 3B Haley Wills had 2 hits including a 2 run double in the 5th. Dodger Coach Andi Adams says Monday’s win was a complete performance.

Dodgers advance to the State Semifinals on Wednesday they will take on 5 seed Ankeny Centennial who elimiated Waukee 5-2 in a matinee game on Monday.

Humboldt Softball fell to Mount Vernon in Monday’s nightcap 7-4. Wildcats trailed 2-0 after the 1st they would score 1 in the 3rd to cut it to 2-1. The game would stay 2-1 until Mount Vernon plated 5 in the top of the 7th thanks to a Grand Slam by Depaul University commit Nicole Sullivan. Humboldt would rally to score 3 in the bottom of the 7th but that would be as close as they would get. Humboldt finishes their season with a record of 20-3. The loss means the end of the high school careers for several seniors for Humboldt, a class who led them to 3 State Tournament appearances in their careers.

in what was one of the biggest upsets of day one action, Class 5A 6 seed Muscatine dethroned defending State Champs and 3 seed WDM-Valley 3-1. That means a new champion in Class 5A will be crowned this year.

Other Day 1 Results

5A –  2 seed Cedar Rapids Kennedy 10-4 over 7 seed Pleasant Valley. If both Kennedy and Fort Dodge win Wednesday, the Title Game Thursday would be a rematch of last year’s consolation round game that Fort Dodge won.

Semifinal #2 Wednesday 12:30 PM  Fort Dodge vs Ankeny Centennial

4A

1 Carlisle 5-0 8 Le Mars . Good to see that Carlisle Coach Jim Flaws decided to make the trip to Fort Dodge for state just about 2 weeks after cancelling the regular season finale here in Fort Dodge due to covid-19 concerns. It would’ve been a rematch from a 2-0 Fort Dodge win at Carlisle earlier in the year.

6 seed Dallas Center Grimes a 7-5 winner over 3 seed Fairfield.
