The 2020 State Wrestling Tournament started Thursday with plenty of area schools being represented and it was a strong showing for wrestlers from the area. Fort Dodge had 11 wrestlers qualify for state of that 11, 7 won their 1st round matches and 2 others won consolation matches after 1st round losses. Lane and Brooks Cowell, Drake Ayala, Carson Taylor, Brandon Mills, Dreyzon Phillips, and Levi Egli all with 1st round wins. Kody Cook and Max Bishop had wins in the consolation bracket after 1st round losses. The Dodgers went 7-4 in the 1st round and 9-6 overall on day 1. Thursday night Class 1A wrestlers took center stage in round 1. East Sac County’s Nate Thomson with a pinfall win at 132 he advances to the Quarterfinals. Dane Johnson from Pocahontas Area had a pinfall win at 285 to advance to the Quarterfinals. South Central Calhoun’s Jordan Khommanyvong and Blake Mcalister advanced with 1st round wins and teammate Kevin King is in the consolation bracket after losing his 1st match but bouncing back to win his 2nd. Eagle Grove duo of Mark Dawson at 145 and Joel Mendoza at 220 both advanced after 1st round wins. Donavon Hanson and Connor Fehr of West Bend-Mallard are still in it on the consolation side after they both went 1-1 Thursday. John Schuttler of Manson NW Webster lost his 1st match but bounced back to win his 2nd and remained alive in the consolation bracket.
“Sunny” 99.7 ‘s coverage of Day 2 of The 2020 State Wrestling Tourney begins Friday at 9AM with the class 3A quarterfinals. “Sunny” 99.7 will also have The Class 1A Quarterfinals and 3A Semifinals are scheduled to begin at 2:30 PM and The night session slated to start at 8:45 PM featuring the Class 1A Semifinals.
