“Survive & Advance” South Central Calhoun Boys Now One Step From State Tourney

The late great Jim Valvano used to say that the mentality tournament basketball should be “survive and advance”. Jimmy V used that motto to lead NC State to the NCAA Tournament Title in 1983. On Tuesday Night, South Central Calhoun’s Boys captured the spirit of that motto edging out a playoff win over Roland-Story. It was nothing short of an instant classic, Greene County high was the neutral site host of the game.

South Central Calhoun trailed most all night, but got the lead when it mattered most. Titans were down 13-8 after the 1st. Roland-Story had a 14-7 advantage in the 2nd and led by 12 at the half. The Titans battled back and cut the lead to 41-34 after 3. Titans were down 48-43 with 3 minutes left. They would put on a clinic in how to close a game though, finishing on a 10-2 run. South Central Calhoun got a 1 point lead with under a minute left. Roland-Story would have chances but to take the lead but missed shots. SCC got the ball back with just seconds left and Cole Corey would go to the free throw line.

Brian Peters on the call, as Corey had “ice water in his veins” knocking down the pair late to extend the lead to 53-50. Roland-Story would have one last chance in the closing seconds.

The final call as South Central Calhoun claims the District Title, advancing with a 53-50 win. Titans will take on Iowa Falls – Alden for a ticket to the State Tournament. Iowa Falls upset the top seed in the Sub-State bracket Dike- New Hartford on Tuesday. So the stage is set, South Central Calhoun and Iowa Falls Alden on Saturday Night, a 7 PM tip off on 105-9 FM and here on our website. The winner will punch their ticket to play at the 2021 State Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.  It is the second straight trip to the Sub-State Finals for South Central Calhoun.
