Webster County Sheriff’s Deputy Cleared In Fatal Shooting

A law enforcement officer has been cleared of any wrong doing in the shooting death of a suspect. Webster County Sheriff’s Deputy Brett Knippel will not face charges after shooting an armed woman in August. The incident happened the night of August 4th on 20th Ave. South here in Fort Dodge. 39 year old Melissa Halda charged at officers while armed with a knife. Law Enforcement was called to the scene that night on reports that Halda was armed with knives and was suicidal. The Iowa Attorney General’s Office says Knippel fired 5 shots after Halda began to charge at him, 4 of those shots hit Halda. Deputy Knippel has over two decades of service in the Sheriff’s Office and is expected to return to work in the upcoming future.
