Woman Shot and Killed By Law Enforcement Identified

The woman who was shot and killed by law enforcement officer last week near Fort Dodge has been identified. 39 year old Melissa Halda has been identified as the woman involved following completion of an autopsy by the State Medical Examiner. She was shot and killed Tuesday Night at a residence just south of Fort Dodge. The officer who shot and killed her has been identified as Deputy Brett Knippel of the Webster County Sheriff’s Office. Officers from the Sheriff’s Office and Fort Dodge Police Dept. were called to a residence on 20th Ave South. Tuesday Night on reports that Halda was suicidal and was wielding knives. After officers arrived she reportedly ran at Knippel with the knives, he then shot her. Halda was pronounced dead at the scene, Deputy Knippel is currently on administrative leave while the shooting is being investigated.
