Girls State Tourney Report: Bishop Garrigan Scratches Out A Win, Newell-Fonda Cruises

Both Bishop Garrigan and Newell-Fonda advanced in the 1A Girls State Tournament with wins in the State Quarterfinals on Wednesday. The two games though were “night and day” different. #1 Garrigan had their hands full and had to earn it. They pulled out a 48-42 win over 8th seeded Springville. Garrigan trailed late in the 3rd quarter but closed the 3rd on an 8-2 to run. That would put them yp 37-33 going into the fourth and they would maintain the lead the rest of the way.

D-1 prospect Audi Crooks led them with a double-double, 25 points and 10 boards on 12 of 13 shooting from the floor. Her teammate Molly Joyce added a baker’s dozen despite an off shooting night from the field. Garrigan will advance to take on EHK on Friday at 2 PM.

It was a compltely different story for the defending State Champs, Newell-Fonda, The 2nd ranked Mustangs cruised past the 7 seed Kingsley Pierson, 88-47. Newell-Fonda opened the game on a 12-0 to build a 31-15 lead after the 1st. They would have another un later in the game of 22 unanswered points. Mustangs had put the game out of reach by halftime, as they built a 60-24 lead at the break. Newell-Fonda had four players in double figures. Ella Larsen had a game high 19, Macy Sievers had 15, Bailey Sievers and Mary Walker both added a baker’s dozen.

Newell_Fonda advances to take on the 6 seed Montezuma on Friday at 4 PM. Montezuma got an upset win over #3 St. Ansgar on Wednesday. If Bishop Garrigan and Newell-Fonda both win on Friday, it would set up a showdown between the two in the State Finals on Saturday.
