South Central Calhoun Boys Looking For State Tourney Bid Saturday Night
South Central Calhoun’s Boys find themselves in a familiar position on Saturday. Just a year ago, they were in this same spot just one win away from punching their ticket to the State Tournament. Last year’s bid fell just short as they dropped the Sub-State game to West Sioux. Several key contributor’s from last year were on the floor that night and no doubt would like to erase that memory with a win this time around.
South Central Calhoun will meet Iowa Falls-Alden at Marshalltown High School and the winner will advance to Wells Fargo. Titans advanced after a thrilling 53-50 comeback win over Roland-Story, thanks in part to the late free throws from Cole Corey. Iowa Falls is fresh off an upset win over the bracket’s #1 seed Dike- New Hartford 57-52. Titans are 9-2 in their last 11, Iowa Falls has won 5 in a row.
The Cadets are led by Senior Karson Sharar who averages 22 points per game and had 23 in their upset win to get here. His teammate Blake Janssen contributed in a variety of ways to that win, as he had 10 points, 12 boards and 5 assists.
It’s a balanced offensive attack for South Central Calhoun. They feature three players who average in double figures. Brennan Holder leads the way at nearly 17 PPG and shoots 40% from 3 point range. Josh Dietrich averages 14 PPG and is the team’s leading rebounder at 7.6 per. Cole Corey averages just under 14 points and just over 4 assists per.
The Titans have been good on defense all year, allowing just 53 points per game. They play primarily a 2-3 zone which could make Iowa Falls Alden’s outside shooting a major factor. The Cadets are shooting just 26% as a team from 3 this season.
