State Softball Getting Underway , Newell-Fonda Set To Play In Tournament Opener
The 2021 installment of the Iowa State Softball Tournament gets underway on Monday morning. Class 1A will take center stage on Monday morning to open things up from Rogers Park. Newell-Fonda has been the top ranked team in that class all season and will be on display in the tournament’s opening game. The Mustangs are 35-4 and two of those losses came to ranked teams from larger classes, including a loss to 5A’s top seed Fort Dodge. The Mustangs are making their 4th consecutive trip and their 13th in 16 years. They take on 8 seed North Butler on Monday at 11AM. In other 1A Quarterfinal action, #4 SE Warren takes on #5 Sigourney at 11:30 AM. The winner will get the Newell-Fonda vs North Butler winner in the Semifinals. Wayne is the 2 seed and they will take on 7 seed Remsen St. Mary’s at 1 PM. #3 Lisbon meets Clarksville at 1:30 PM. The 1A Semifinals are Wednesday at 11AM and 1 PM. The 1A State Championship Game is set for Thursday at 5 PM.
Class 2A will take the field Monday afternoon. #1 Wilton has 8th seeded Pella Christian at 3 PM. The four and five match up features Earlham and North Union at 3:30. At 5 PM, 2 seed North Linn takes on Iowa City-Regina. Rounding out Monday’s 2A slate is #3 Central Springs taking on 6th seed Underwood. The Class 2A Semifinals are Wednesday at 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM and the 2A State Title Game is Thursday at 7:30 PM.
Two of the four, Class 3A Quarterfinals will finish out day one of the State Tournament. #1 Davenport Assumption takes on #8 Clarke at 7 PM. The nightcap at 7:30 is #4 Atlantic and #5 Anamosa.
