The Fort Dodge Dodgers fell 3-0 in the 5A State Quarterfinals Tuesday night to West Des Moines Valley. The loss was the first for the Dodgers since June 29th. The game was a dual between the starting pitchers Fort Dodge freshman Jalen Adams and Valley Senior Haley Gatica. Jalen Adams coming into the game with Valley had a streak of 14 consecutive scoreless innings in the playoffs, she would extend that streak to 17 before surrendering the 1st run of the game in the 4th. Valley would get two more in the 5th after getting the first 2 batters of the inning on base. The Dodgers offense was only able to muster 5 hits on the night against Gatica. The Dodgers threatened in the 1st and in the 7th but couldn’t drive in runners that were in scoring position. In the 7th the Dodgers would get the 1st two hitters on base and then load the bases with one out. With bases juiced and one out the Dodgers hit a ground ball back to Gatica would throw it home for the out, the throw was a touch high and it looked like it pulled the Valley catcher Katie Newman off the plate which would have allowed Dodger Catcher T.K. Doster to score, however the home plate umpire ruled the catcher was in fact on the plate when receiving the throw. The Dodger runner that advanced to 3rd base would get caught leading off the base in the aftermath of the play at the plate and the runner would be picked off for the final out. While the Dodgers quest for a state title has come to an end they will play one final game Wednesday at 3pm in the consolation bracket vs Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
